First steps to Identify your core values

My clients answer a list of questions in the process of identifying their core values.

Today I’m asking you just one. -- The one I think will be most relevant and revealing – assuming that you’re already vegan or intentionally moving in that direction…

QUESTION: What was your main reason for becoming vegan?

Whatever that answer is for you, it’s the start of uncovering one or more of your core values. Here is how to use it…

1. Take your answer from above and ask yourself “What makes that reason IMPORTANT to me?”
Give yourself some time to consider. There is no rush, no pressure and no wrong answer.

2. Write down or record your answer if possible. You may have multiple answers, or your answer may have multiple parts to it. You want to be able to see all of it.

3. Select the bit that you feel is MOST IMPORTANT among all of what you have written down.

4. Next, take that MOST important thing you have selected and ask yourself “How would I describe a person who values that thing and who behaves in a way that reflects that?”

5. That should give you a personal principle – a.k.a. a value.

Because veganism is an ethical choice that is deeply meaningful to each of us, any value that drives our decision to be vegan is likely to be a CORE value.

In my next post I’ll share my personal example, following the above process, and the core value that I arrived at.

In the meantime, I invite you to do this for yourself and see what you uncover.
And if you feel comfortable to share, I’d love to hear
